Hemorrhoids – What are they and How to Prevent Them

by Louis Cruz

Hemorrhoids are rectal veins that have become prolapsed and inflamed. Hemorrhoids originate from the hemorrhoidal plexus which are a group of veins in the rectum. That is where the name hemorrhoids is derived. There are two vein groups: external veins and internal veins.

There are also two types of hemorrhoids and they are classified according to there location. When only the internal veins are the ones affected then they are called internal hemorrhoids . If the external veins are the ones affected then they are called external hemorrhoids.

The symptoms may vary a little in the two types of hemorrhoids. Internal hemorrhoids are symptom free many times. They manifest themselves mainly as bleeding.

People who have internal hemorrhoids can be asymptomatic (have no symptoms). But they may be startled when they see blood in the toilet after a bowel movement. Sometimes large amounts of bright red blood is seen but many times just a streak of blood is seen on the stool.

Warning: This can be a symptom of a serious disease such as cancer, so always consult you doctor to determine the cause.

Signs and Symptoms present mostly in the external form of hemorrhoids are:

  • Bleeding after bowel movement or noticed while wiping the anal area
  • Pain and swelling to the point where it can make walking difficult
  • Itching and irritation around the anal area
  • Hemorrhoids protruding from your anus
  • A Sensitive and painful lump near your anus
  • Fecal Leakage

What Causes Hemorrhoids?

Many Life-Style factors are involved in the development of hemorrhoids. Some of these are:

1. Low amounts of fiber in the diet

2. Straining during a bowel movement

3. Obesity

4. Constipation

5. Lack of Exercise

But the thing is, you can prevent and improve hemorrhoids by modifying these life-style factors but many times you cannot correct them completely after they have developed.  These measures are necessary to prevent hemorrhoids and improve them but will not cure them completely.  If you are suffering from hemorrhoids you need to  modify these factors but you also need extra help to get rid of hemorrhoids completely.

Treatment options vary in the conventional and alternative medicine field. A great variety of ointments, creams and suppositories exist for treating hemorrhoids. But understand that these are only for relief of symptoms. They do not give complete relief from hemorrhoids!

Surgery is the method of choice to correct hemorrhoids in medicine but many times two thing may happen. One that is very litle known is that even after surgery these Hemorrhoids can COME BACK!! And number two is that unless you have a great insurance plan the procedure is very expensive.
